“This is the Royal Snake of Egypt, the giver of Life and Death. If you will not allow him to create, he will devour.”
* Evangeline Adams, 1930
Dramatic stuff for a greenish, icy outpost 1.8 million miles from the Sun. Uranus was discovered in 1781, though his influence is a primary mover in our modern society. The age of inception into our consciousness is associated with the American and French Revolutions, but his mythological origins are ancient. One thing for sure, Uranus has always been tied to upheaval. He powers cataclysmic changes that inevitably lead to a new way of life- that’s home field for this revolutionary.
Evangeline Adams was one of the major trailblazers of astrology in the 20th century. She successfully defended her practice in a court of law by accurate and deft prophecy, and her words are still a hallmark of astrological teaching. In reading her description of Uranus, I am struck by the occult connotations. I have always been impressed by Uranus’ powers of eccentricity and individuation. Ms. Adams sees Uranus from a darker perspective. This column will discuss both aspects of our unearthly companion otherwise known as “The Great Awakener”.
Genius; anarchist; Kundalini energy. These are all key definitions of the erratic energy of Uranus. Even the physical appearance and orientation of the actual planet is odd. Uranus has an extreme 90 degree tilt of axis, so that the north and south poles orient to the Sun. If one could live on the North pole of Uranus, you would see the Sun constantly for 42 years, and then experience the same period of total darkness. This extreme axis tilt makes it unique, different from the other known planets in our solar system.
Uranus is the ruling planet of the sign Aquarius. The symbol for Aquarius, the “Water Bearer” shostyle a human form holding a vessel and pouring the waters of life out for all of humanity. That is the life giving aspect; old Ouranos not only poured out the energy of creation on his lover Gaia, he co-created her flowers and vegetation. Loving Venus is also said to have burst forth from his spilled semen. But wait, so did the vengeful Furies. He is fecund, unruly and wild.
Ouranos comes to us as the mythological father of Saturn. In ancient Greece he was known as the first child of Gaia, Mother Earth. He first nourished her with gentle rain, and then became her consort. As their varied offspring gained vitality and power, Ouranos become jealous and so tyrannical that Gaia persuaded their youngest child, Chronos (also known as Saturn) to castrate him. Other myths portray Saturn as the jealous son eager to seize power from his father. Either way, these tales portray the inception of historical animosity between a son and his father. Symbolically, this story also speaks of the jealousy of time (Saturn) over instinctive creative ability.
Evangeline Adams also describes Uranus as ” the planet of genius, the . . . secret magical power in man that lies (according to the Indian mythology) coiled at the base of the spine like a snake, ready to strike up and illuminate the whole, or downward to damnation. Genius may break; it will not bend.”
The image of genius not bending is one of the most fascinating aspects of Uranus. I am intrigued by individuals who labor tirelessly to create their unique vision in whatever field calls them. Be it art, music, gardening; some people are called forth to create tirelessly. Individuals who march to an inner drummer, feeding an inner call and not caring what others think. These are the ones with Uranus placed at an active position in the natal chart. Uranus conjunct the Ascendant is a perfect example. (Remember the Ascendant is our mask or personality) This genius cannot bend, it sees not need to. There is a vision born not only of self confidence, but a deeper need. Vincent van Gogh suffered a wretched life, but continued to paint though rarely sold his paintings. I much admire pure creative spark; the ever flowing source that fills the well.
Self individuation follostyle creative spark. It is that voice that claims “I Am”, and “This is what I do!” Then we become separate from our parents or peers, on the road to mastery. Individuation also speaks to unwillingness to compromise, hence the revolutionary aspect. With Uranus, it is principles as well as ensuing lifestyle changes which follow. Uranus awakens you to the fact that there is more to living than food and warmth. As the “Great Awakener” Uranus helps open the door between our conscious and unconscious minds so we learn our true purpose for this lifetime.
Uranus transits are notoriously unsettling. Think of Uranus as a catalyst, an agent that causes or speeds up chemical reactions. It is like the hardener in super glue. Working subtly, Uranus can disrupt your everyday life and force you to develop unexpressed abilities. A perfect example of this type of Uranian influence is light bulbs popping or computers crashing when you touch them. One can learn to feel this energy, and even use it. But then, everything in your life goes off like a broken bulb. This touches on the occult aspect, the beginning of Serpent energy that Evangeline Adams addresses. When I see certain aspects in astrological charts, I flash to Egyptian temples. These visions are almost always prompted by Uranus aspects.
During a major transit, such as aspecting Moon or cardinal point, Uranus can transform the foundations of your life. In these times, resistance to change is a futile effort causing only more turmoil. And, things can change in a big way. We are being called to discard the old self and create a new improved version. This, I suspect, is expressed in symbolism of the real kundalini experience.
Uranus is presented as a major player in my hierarchy of astrological importance. I choose the title “The Facilitator” because he will help speed us all on our journey to higher consciousness. Mother Earth and Father Sky. They both nourish us, but this rebel also heralds the age of machines and technology that release us from toil. Uranus will take us back from whence we came, but as a new and improved version.

Most people who have heard of Chiron associate it with the words ‘wounded healer,’ but there is much more to his tale. Chiron’s first keyword, as described by its discoverer, astronomer Charles Kowal, was ‘Maverick’. With his eccentric orbit pattern, Chiron was indeed different from the other stellar bodies, and stood out as a unique scientific discovery. Often labeled an asteroid, Chiron may actually be an orbiting comet caught up by the Sun’s gravitational force.
Comets have always been viewed as harbingers of change. Chiron’s orbit stays mostly between Uranus and Saturn, but sometimes moves out beyond even Neptune. The trajectory of Chiron is highly elliptical like that of a comet, and astronomers question if Chiron will even stay bound within orbit of our Sun permanently. Of his 50 year orbit, the maverick spends the most years in Aries and the least in Libra. ‘Comets throughout history have been viewed as omens. Some believe Chiron’s discovery may point to the balance needed to move humanity into an alternative life-style of holism that will support Earth and all life upon it in abundance.’ (*1)
According to myth, Chiron is the abandoned child of a nymph and a philandering husband. Chiron is the first born of the race of Centaurs because his father Chronos (or Saturn), shapeshifted into a stallion at the moment of orgasm. His mother, shocked at the half bestial baby which she delivered, left it to die at the top of Mount Pelion. A human child would have succumbed to the forces of nature, but Chiron’s equine and immortal halves allowed him to thrive in the rocky slopes of Mt. Pelion. Thus, Chiron started out life abandoned and alone, forced to become self-reliant as well as face and ultimately heal his own darkness. And, true to the centaur’s archetype of healing, Chiron transits do often trigger wounding and consequential recovery events in astrology.
The Teacher
Chiron was educated by the twin team of Apollo and Artemis. From Apollo he learned ethics, philosophy, math, music, reason, logic and medicine; all that is redeeming about civilization. From Artemis, the huntress, he learned the way of the forest, and the use of herbs and all that is important about the wilderness and nature. Artemis was also considered a guardian of young children, a task which Chiron took on willingly.
He is regarded as a wise philosopher who taught a wide range of topics from astrology and astronomy to mathematics, and notably, healing. Chiron’s healing specialty was through natural methods. His name remains today as a root of the term ‘chiropractic’, which utilizes hands on adjustment of the body. Chiron was a compassionate instructor, and it would seem that he should also be assigned rulership of surrogate parenting. In his secluded home atop Mt. Pelios, Chiron raised and educated the mighty warrior Achilles, another mythological spirit who suffered from a debilitating vulnerability. Chiron is also remembered as the guardian and mentor of Jason, the warrior whose journey led him to fight a dragon which never slept. Jason’s destiny was to pursue a magical golden fleece which also caused him personal agony.
The Shaman
Being born the result of a shape-shifting event, Chiron is also associated with the shamanic tradition. The shaman in aboriginal cultures is the bridge between humanity and the outer forces, a concept very much akin to that of Chiron. The shaman is really there to serve the community or culture. And, like Chiron, the wounded healer, often in the life of a shaman there is an injury such as early disease, blindness, a near-death experience, or some other experience that causes him or her to gather strength and power and drives them to fulfill a destiny. Native American prophecy states that when the planet of healing is discovered in the sky, the ancient sacred warrior teachings will return to the Earth. Soon after Chiron’s discovery in 1977 the Native American Religious Freedom Act was passed which formally allowed Native American medicine man to practice in their culturally prescribed traditions.
The Key
Many astrologers have pooled their wealth of experience to the body of Chiron learning. One of the most interesting contributions is offered by astrologer Richard Nolle who points out appropriately, ‘the symbol for Chiron is a stylized key. Look at it and the meaning becomes clear. A key is a device used to open a passageway from one reality to another. That, in essence, is just what Chiron represents.’
Another astrologer who has added greatly is Barbara Hand Clow in her invaluable classic first published in 1987, ‘Chiron- Rainbow Bridge Between the Inner and Outer Planets.’(*2) In the introduction she states ‘Chiron influence is not a thing, it is an energetic force; it is an action verb instead of a noun. The placement of Chiron in the natal chart functions like a hieroglyph. It is a vehicle in the chart to show where and how realities intersect. It is a doorway into feelings about events, …and a revelation of the cosmic influence. It is an occult or seeing tool.’ This book is a must read for anyone who wishes to understand the wise Centaur and how he functions in any astrological chart.
Two other astrologers made early notable contributions. In 1983, Erminie Lantero wrote, ‘I come to my own position. Chiron means to me the principle of healing or wholemaking, on any level. It surprised me for awhile that although healing did not go unnoticed by other researchers, they were slow to recognize it as a primary theme ¬despite the fact that illnesses and deaths were found from the beginning to occur fairly frequently under Chiron transits.’ (*3)
Zane B. Stein is also noted for an early contribution to Dell Horoscope magazine in January 1981. He writes ‘the position of Chiron in the chart of the healer not only indicates the healer’s preferred methods – but also those tools that the healer will find most successful in treating others. Sleep itself is not ruled by Chiron; but Chiron does rule a very specific part of sleep – sleep as a healing tool.’ Other keywords assigned to Chiron by Stein are: common ground, personal imperative, turning point, pulling the plug or removing the dam, and loopholes.
The Wounded Healer
Most dramatic in the legend of Chiron are the circumstances of his death. The wise master was accidentally wounded by a poisoned arrow fired by his friend Hercules. Being immortal, he did not die, but suffered on in great pain. Finally, in a bargain struck with Olympus, Chiron agreed to leave his gift of immortality and descend through the gates of the Underworld to be relieved of his dreadful physical pain. In return, the rebellious titan Prometheus was freed from his captivity and torture decreed as punishment for the gifts he had given to humans.
The gifts to mankind from Prometheus were numerous. He is most remembered for stealing fire from the gods and giving it to humans, but Prometheus also relayed brick and wood work, astronomy, numbers and letters, ships and sails, and the mining of metals. As an archetype, Prometheus is the Wild Man, or an expression of the planet Uranus. (*4) So, as a rainbow bridge between Saturn and Uranus, Chiron is a catalyst of courage, wisdom, and love, ingredients which set the human soul free.
For astrologers who are interested in calculating a birth chart for Chiron, astronomer Charles Kowal who is credited with discovery lists it as: November 1, 1977, 10:00 AM, Pasadena, California. The chart is rich in symbolism and there are two outstanding features. First, the ascendant is 26º Sagittarius, a degree which is also considered to be the center of the Milky Way or Galactic Center. Also notable is the Sabian Symbol message for the astrological degree of Chiron at 4º Taurus: ‘The Pot of Gold at the End of the Rainbow.’
In his book ‘Genesis of the Grail Kings’, (*5) author and historian Laurence Gardner expounds at length on a theory that the great pyramids of Egypt were built using a superheated white powder known as monatomic gold. This altered form of gold functioned as an anti-gravity lubricant which helped workers move the giant building blocks. Gardner also suggests that monatomic gold was taken as a supplement by Egyptian pharaohs to enhance their creativity and self confidence.
Today, monatomic gold is said to be a substance which feeds and strengthens our light bodies and promotes ascension. In addition to mystical arts and healing, I propose that Chiron be assigned rulership of monatomic gold. How appropriate for Chiron whose function is to ground the pure energy of Uranus into the form and structure of Saturn; the maverick who holds the key to travel between the seen and unseen realms.
It is interesting to note that the Greek root of the word Christ is ‘khrien’, and the core meaning is ‘to anoint’; this is another action of hands on healing. Perhaps Chiron carries the archetype of a Christ like figure who has returned to our dimension with a mission of healing the Lucifer rebellion which fueled our feelings of separation from Source. Surely Chiron is both the alchemist who ignites our passions, as well as a shaman who accompanies us on our deepest healing journeys. And, as a shapeshifter, he conveys the transformative power of color and light to help us all on our healing journeys. Yes, Chiron is the rainbow, and he brings us to the gold of alchemy.

When moving beyond simple sun sign horoscopes, astrological interpretation is generated from the relative positioning of planets within a 360° circle. Another tool in the astrologer’s bag is the ‘Sabian Symbols’, a collection of 360 messages, one for each degree of the zodiac. Traditionally one reads a message for their Ascendant, Sun, and Moon as offering insights into the personality, life path, or emotional makeup. It’s also important to clear up one area of confusion at the start of this discussion. Because the zodiac starts at 00.00 degrees, and the Sabian Symbols start at 1 degree, you must round up to the next degree. For instance, if your Sun is at 15° Pisces, read the message for 16° Pisces because of this rounding up rule.
The Sabian Symbols were ‘birthed’ on a single day in 1925. Astrologer Marc Edmund Jones spent the afternoon in a San Diego park with clairvoyant Elsie Wheeler. Jones had a blank pack of 360 previously marked index cards, one for each degree of the zodiac. (For instance, Aries 1, 2, 3, etc.) The cards were pulled at random, and Ms. Wheeler gave her psychic impression as each card was presented. Together, they tapped into a matrix of universal consciousness and the images generated that day are a powerful addition to the art of astrology.
Jones felt the messages tapped into ancient Chaldean teachings maintained by a group of early occultists, the Sabians, who lived in what is now Iraq from the third millennium BC to the thirteenth century AD. After their inception in 1925, the images were taught only to a group of his private students until 1953 when he published ‘The Sabian Symbols in Astrology’. His book is still used as the primary source for text on the subject.
In addition to Marc Jones, there are two other major contributors to the Sabian Symbols. Astrologer Dane Rudhyar defined and refined the images in 1973 in his book titled ‘An Astrololgical Mandala- The Cycle of Transformations and Its 360 Symbolic Phases’. Rudhyar expanded the Sabian symbols to present them as a contemporary I Ching, or oracle.
In 1995, Australian Astrologer Lynda Hill released her contribution ‘The Sabian Symbols as an Oracle’. Again based on original text by Wheeler and Jones, Hill radically expands the possibilities for sources of relevant messages. Jones and Rudhyar more or less kept the messages within the confines of planetary or natal chart degrees. Hill has released one edition of her book with a deck of cards, and makes a case for receiving Sabian messages as a pure oracle, much like picking a tarot card. Though not limited to pure astrology, her techniques do have a solid foundation there. I recommend her book as an innovative and well researched offering.
For examples of the amazing synchronistic messages inherent in the Sabian Symbols, here are widely differing portraits of two men born the same year. Between the two, they have impacted the consciousness of much of the world. They were each born into the most humble conditions; and both can be described as ‘liberators’, though of differing genres. Following are the Sabian oracle messages for the Dalai Lama (born Jan 6, 1935) and Elvis Presley (born Jan 8, 1935).
Elvis and the Dalai Lama
The Dalai Lama is an inspirational spiritual leader, yet describes himself as ‘a simple monk’. His flame of leadership and wisdom has shone steadfastly throughout a life of momentous challenges. Even today, as we enter into a New Age of equality and enlightenment, the Dalai Lama leads with the wisdom of ancient teachings. He is truly a light bearer and guide for the world; a spiritual liberator.
The Sabian message for the Dalai Lama’s Ascendant (*10° Cancer) is: ‘A large diamond in the first stages of the cutting process; the arduous training for perfection in order to fully manifest an ideal’. The venerable Dalai Lama has been in arduous training since he was taken from his parents as a youth to be schooled by lamas. And, that was just the early years. The Chinese government added death and destruction to his role as spiritual leader of the Tibetan people. Shaped by heat and pressure, diamonds are one of the most highly prized substances on earth and valued for their hardness, clarity, and quality of reflecting light.
The message for his Sun (13° Cancer) is: ‘A flexed hand with a prominent thumb is held out for study; the power of the will in shaping character’. In palmistry, the thumb signifies will and strength of character. This outstretched hand also symbolizes sharing knowledge. As a world educator, and one who has overcome unimaginable difficulties, the Dalai Lama is a brilliant example of both his Sun and Ascendant oracle messages.
Elvis Presley lives posthumously in the hearts and minds of millions of adoring fans around the world. Born also of humble beginnings in a shack in Tupelo, Mississippi, he rose to monumental heights of fame and popularity. This ‘King’ generated excitement through the ecstasy of adoration and sexual liberation.
It is interesting to look at Elvis starting with the message of his karmic condition which is revealed by the degree before his Sun (**17° Capricorn): ‘A repressed woman finds psychological release in nudism; the escape from bondage to social inhibitions and a reliance upon the wisdom of the body.’ Elvis had a twin brother who died at birth. Perhaps his survival left a legacy of repressed guilt. With a flair for foreshadowing, the King of Rock and Roll appears on the scene as a soul with nothing left to lose.
The next degree, his solar expression (18° Capricorn) is: ‘The Union Jack flies from a British warship; strength and protection afforded by powerful institutions in charge of maintaining order.’ The institution that helped create and drive Elvis’ empire was his manager and even surrogate father, Colonel Tom Parker. The relationship between Elvis and the Colonel had an undeniable dark side of manipulation and deception, but history also portrays the two as inseparable.
Fittingly, Elvis had a fiery Ascendant (13° Sagittarius): ‘A widow’s past is brought to light; the karma of past actions as it affects opportunities presented by a new cycle’. In the recesses of mass consciousness, the ‘King’ lives on. It’s interesting to note that after he died in 1977 his wife and daughter stepped in to keep his legacy alive through strategic management.
For additional insights into astrology, the Sabian Symbols are invaluable. All three books mentioned in this article are readily available, and you will be intrigued by what is revealed.

(This is the fifth chapter in a series intended as an introduction to basic astrology. As we continue on a path through the cosmos, this visit explores the watery world and mythological development of the planet Neptune.)
Image displayed with same as articleCommanding his chariot pulled through the waters by a team of wild seahorses, Neptune possesses the strength and fury of oceanic storms, as well as the mesmerizing quality of days adrift in the doldrums. Never forget the erosive quality of water when considering Neptune. How can we feel and find these secret places? Surely, it is as simple as holding water in one’s hand.
Neptune is best described by images. Greek mythology provides one explanation as to how the cosmos came into being and gave birth to archetype deities. Earth Goddess Gaia was the first to emerge out of the original state of Chaos. Gaia soon coupled with her son Ouranos (Uranus), ruler of the sky. Their descendants, Zeus (Jupiter), Hades, (Pluto), and Poseidon (Neptune) emerge as three of the twelve Gods of Heaven who resided on Mt. Olympus. Jupiter assumed administration and rulership of the cosmos and delegated authority to his two siblings. Pluto was sanctioned to maintain an iron grip on the underworld. The oceans of the earth, as well as the element of water were Neptune’s assignments.
The oceans remain commanding and mysterious today, but consider how forbidding they appeared to the Ancients. Long sea voyages brought opportunity for adventure and wealth, or loss of life; depending on favors of the mysterious Sea god, Poseidon. Riches found under the water as well as above are another quality of Neptune. Buried treasures awaiting discovery; bountiful harvests of fish and plant life, all there for the taking. A wealth of wonder is available to the seeker of truth who visits Neptune with an open heart.
Neptune also rules the waves that relentlessly wash upon the shore and carves away sandcastles. Dissolution is another quality to be explored as we meet this ancient archetype. Just as sugar dissolves in a cup of tea, Neptune calls for self interest to be blended into a new quest for Universal Love. As we all know, love has many forms. And love, whether it is spiritual devotion or even sexual ecstasy asks that we relinquish ego control and surrender to a union.
Accessing higher consciousness assumes a positive response to Neptune’s influences. However, there is another side to the Poseidon/Neptune archetype. Dionysus, mythical offspring of Persephone, (Queen of the Underworld) is another representative of the ecstatic state. The archetype of Dionysus may be one of the oldest gods. Credited with introducing wine to humanity, he was noted for his travels far and wide spreading intoxication and dancing with maidens. Dionysus forged the earthly “Wild Man” persona until he fell in love and married princess Ariadne. Marriage, or the capacity for love and commitment that come with maturity served him well, as shortly thereafter he was admitted to the company of Olympic gods.
Neptune’s palette broadens as we introduce the Dionysusian qualities of music and drugs. Add theatre and acting, combined with a touch of idealism, and we begin to dine at his table. Shamanism is another expression of Neptunian vistas. In trance state, the shaman assumes the personality or other qualities of an outside entity. He or she must relinquish personal control of ego and allow embodiment of another (preferably sacred image) for a limited time. The shamans’ tools of dance, ritual, music or rhythmic drumming, masks, and altered states of consciousness lead the tribe to a unified state of spiritual ecstasy. Once again the common theme is surrender.
Neptune leads us to Divinity. The temples and shrines. Holy water. Sacred Mother. Mt. Kailas. Healing circle in your back yard. A quite moment of meditation when we access the Divine. But, alas, we do not dwell in her beauty infinitely. As mortals, we only visit. The shaman leaves her trance, and we all return to our daily lives; changed. She is so intense; we can only glimpse her immortality, not stay indefinitely.
If Posiedon and Dionysus represent the male aspect of Neptune, then surely the Divine Goddess and her temples embody the feminine. The Sumerian goddess Nammu is the earliest recorded source of a primal sea mother who gave birth to heaven and earth (1800 B.C.E.). Traveling through time, the Babylonian Culture absorbed the creation myth of Nammu with the story of Tiamat and Aspu, female and male water deities. Throughout the centuries, cultures continually retell the story of humans walking out of the primal sea, and then longing to return to her bliss.
Subtle yet powerful is the logo on Neptune’s calling card. One more image, this one modern serves to illustrate her strength. The Butterfly Effect is defined as – “sensitive dependence on initial conditions”. Further explained, it is about how slight changes (vibrations) can expand into huge differences (wave forms). Think of how a slight shift in the earth’s crust in the middle of the ocean can trigger a huge tidal wave on shore. Isn’t it exciting to think a single act of kindness or love can move through the vastness of time and space to clear karma! Now, there’s an act of surrender.

Because astrology works in a synchronistic expression of the ‘as above, so below’ model, I am often intrigued with and search for new information which supports what seems to be a basic operating code for all of life on this earth. The concept of vibrational resonance provides us with a model for the ways astrology performs as a tool of manifestation as well as a working guide for living life ‘in tune’ with the cosmos. Learning to consciously tune into the energies of the planets is one tool on a path to higher consciousness. We can also increase our understanding by looking at different yet comparable teachings of other paths.
I recently had the privilege of attending a workshop given by best selling author Dr. Masuro Emoto on the healing aspect of his work which he calls ‘Hado Vibrational Medicine.’ With public acceptance of his book titled ‘The Hidden Messages in Water, Dr. Masuro’s work is now generally acknowledged, but he previously had many years of struggle for recognition within his medical and scientific community. Dr. Emoto is indeed a visionary, and it was somewhat disturbing to witness how his theories provoked antagonism even from other self proclaimed holistic healers.
Many readers are probably already familiar with Emoto’s work. He has developed a system to photograph the crystal formations made by water just as it surrenders from frozen to liquid form. His work provides visual examples and comparisons of water molecules from sources such as clear mountain streams as well as denatured city water. Predictably, the pure and natural water sources show brilliance and organizational clarity in their crystal formations.
Amazingly, Dr. Emoto also used the power of spoken words and intention to illustrate transformations in the crystal structure of water droplets. The water crystal example that changed his life was one formed by exposure to the words ‘love and gratitude’. He feels that his work proves that water has the ability to copy and memorize information. Like many successful individuals, Dr. Emoto has been working diligently for many years, and his work with water crystal photography is actually an outgrowth of his efforts to develop effective healing modalities.
In ‘The Hidden Messages in Water’, Dr. Emoto also asks a simple question of his readers- ‘are you happy?’ He then answers with his opinion that ‘not many people will be able to reply with a resounding yes.’ He addresses the issue of chaos in our world today, as well as our search for a way to eliminate suffering which comes from turmoil. Emoto summarizes his work by stating ‘the more afflicted people that I see, the more I become convinced that illness is not just an individual problem, but a result of the deformation of society as a whole.’ He further addresses the world as a reflection of the soul by concluding ‘just as a drop in a pond creates a ripple that spreads out endlessly, the deformity of even one soul spreads throughout the world, resulting in global deformities.’
The visual image of a ripple in water also offers a useful model for working to change one’s reality and/or offer healings. Emoto’s less scientific and more spiritually oriented teaching of Hado Vibrational theory is built on a foundation of using harmony and resonance as a platform for healing of the physical, mental and emotional injuries the individual as well as the world at large. Hado can also be described as ‘chi’, or even ‘soul’ is energy which moves in waves. Hado energy, like water, needs to be flowing and never stagnant. Our role as human beings, or conscious co-creators of peace, is to be in harmony with all of existence; when a person’s consciousness is polluted by doubt or prejudice, this harmony fails.
If using a model of concentric circles to illustrate progressively finer aspects of energy, Hado lies in the center as an elementary particle of the Universe. So, in this example, the physical body would be the outermost circle, next the organs of our body, and in an even smaller circle inside of the others, the molecules. The next smaller and energetically finer building block would be atoms, and finally, the smallest circle in this model represents Hado, or elementary particles.
We have one more space, though, which must be penetrated in order to influence change on a vibrational resonance level; that which is inside the circle of the elementary particle. Emoto teaches that there lies the realm of creative consciousness, and that it can be penetrated and influenced by water, pleasing music, and positive intentionality. This is also the realm of the ‘observer’ as taught by quantum physics. It seems we must first travel deeply inward, through the concentric rings of organized physical and even atomic energy; and then, once inside, effectively step out of the way to facilitate conscious creation. This brings us back to another model for the ancient teachings of meditation.
And, it provokes important questions regarding astrology. Does planetary influence of our lives on earth originate from the center space of that inner most ring of elementary particles? Or, does it penetrate into the consecutive rings from an outside source? So many teachings are coming together now, and all with one prize to claim; that of inner and outer peace, as well as the ability to understand and create a life of our choice. I will close with another expression of our role as human beings in the fabric of the cosmos.
The following words are from the Vedas of ancient India and over 7000 years old. Consider how they match the teachings of modern quantum thought.
Indra’s Net
There is an endless net of treads throughout the universe.
The horizontal threads are in space, the vertical threads in time.
At every crossing of thread there is an individual, and every individual is a crystal bead. The great light of absolute being illuminates and penetrates every crystal being,
and every crystal being reflects not only the light from every other crystal in the net,
but also every reflection of every re-flection throughout the universe.

Comparing the astrological charts of two or more people to determine compatibility is both an art and a science. There are many ways to extract information but easiest and most obvious approach is to compare natal Sun signs- and it’s a great place to start! The Sun sign can be thought of as a lens through which the rest of one’s blueprint of life will be focused through. Understanding the foundation of any structure helps when adding depth and width.
There is a completely logical order to the 12 signs, and a basic understanding of this makes it easier to approach compatibility. First, analyze the sign by element; fire, earth, air, or water. The fire signs are Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius. Fire is an element of heart, spirit, and courage. Of these three traits, I would assign courage to Aries, heart to Leo, and spirit to Sagittarius. Earth signs like stability, predictability, and growth; a perfect fit for our earth trio of Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn. The air element is predominately mental and/or analytical. Gemini gathers information, Libra analyzes (or weighs) it, and Aquarius disseminates this elixir of knowledge. Next we meet the protective, passionate, and mystical water signs in respective order; Cancer Scorpio, and Pisces.
After determining element, the signs are analyzed by one of three qualities; cardinal, fixed, or mutable. Starting with Aries, we have as our first in the line up a cardinal fire sign. Next comes Taurus; fixed earth. Gemini is mutable air. Returning to cardinal quality, next comes Cancer as cardinal water. And, they continue following that form throughout all 12 signs of the zodiac. (I have included a complete chart at the bottom of this column.) Knowing just these two basic details about someone’s natal astrology can help you understand much more about their nature, and leaves less room for surprises.
As a cardinal fire sign Aries is particularly good at initiating things. Others may expect though, that as a cardinal fire sign Aries might be able to work non stop. Not exactly. Just like any fire in nature, the fuel must be replenished or it burns out leaving a heap of coals and ash. Cancer- water dreamy moon ruled space shots, right? Wrong. Cancer is a water sign, yes, but the quality is cardinal, or action starting. As a cardinal element, Cancer has ambition and an emotional need to be active and productive. Libra is also a cardinal or action starting quality. Libra is often thought of as a sign of compromise and peace making. Yes, but they are driven to make it so, and these activities are a major part of their karmic lesson in life. It doesn’t always come easily, and there are many Libran lessons to be learned about separating the self from others. This cardinal air sign must carefully weigh information and make judgments regarding how to act. Last on the cardinal line up is Capricorn. First analyze by element; earth signs are materialistic and they like predictability. So, this cardinal earth sign will be the most driven of all to achieve both through a sustained push for achievement.
Fixed signs can indeed be stubborn and unmovable- for better or worse. How many people know a solid reliable Taurean? Leo is the fixed fire sign, the one and only. Now there is a worthy opponent; boundless enthusiasm is a positive trait of this Sun ruled planet. Scorpio reigns as the fixed water sign. As a sign that can encompass the highest highs and the lowest lows, Scorpio struggles occasionally with frozen emotions. The antidote is passion. As a fixed air sign, Aquarians are known for their tightly held opinions; keep that in mind when dealing with one.
Mutable is just as the name implies- changeable. It’s a nice quality to have, especially in today’s fast paced world. Quick witted and nimble footed Gemini is mutable air. One cannot get much lighter than that. Earth gods and goddesses Virgos are next on the mutable lineup. Now perhaps you can understand why your Virgo friends are so practical minded, always analyzing and dissecting. It is their nature to take things apart and put them back together again. Known for its wisdom and adventurous spirit is the mutable fire sign Sagittarius. They can be hard to pin down and always need fresh fuel. And last is the mutable sign Pisces. This water sign has great sensitivity, yet being mutable, can lack perseverance (fixed qualities) or initiative (cardinal quality). They will, however, always be your best friend in a time of need.
Of course there are many details of astrological compatibility, but knowing the basics of the Sun signs places you ahead in the game. Start to observe these simple formulations, and you’ll be amazed. What’s your sign, or rather, your quality and element?
